We’ve often outlined some of the best or most interesting places for contractors to work across the globe, but which countries don’t contractors want to be placed in? If this report from The Independent is anything to go by, there are a few locations to avoid:
Known as one of the world’s most secretive states and with a reputation as a country with terrible human rights, it perhaps comes as no surprise that North Korea tops the list. While the tourism is tightly controlled in order to limit exposure to the realities of the country, there are the odd instances of visitors falling foul of local laws. Take the recent case of the American tourist jailed for allegedly attempting to steal a propaganda poster, for example.
The Central American country has crimes rates that would terrify even Ross Kemp. According to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, “Crime and violence are a serious problem throughout Honduras and the country has one of the highest homicide rates in the world.” Armed attacks on vehicles are also common problems, according to the FCO, making this location less than desirable for potential work and living opportunities.
This African country has been subject to much criticism of late. Aside from the well-publicised cross-border attacks by Boko Haram in the Lake Chad region, it was also ranked bottom of the 2015 Travel and Tourism Competiveness Report. This study ranks locations based on a number of criteria, including safety, security and international openness.
Aside from the fact that the country was ranked in the ten least peaceful locations for the 2016 Global Peace Index, Pakistan’s treatment of the LGBT community makes it a very unpopular location to visit or work for many from European citizens. In fact, homosexuality is criminalised in the area, with those found ‘guilty’ facing punishments of up to life in prison.
Finally, this conflict-ridden country understandably makes the list given the risk facing any Westerners visiting the area and any individuals working for Western organisations. In fact, the FCO has advised against all travel to this destination.
Clearly there are a few undesirable locations for contractors around the globe. But at the end of the day it’s important to consider that no country will be enjoyable to visit if you end up in prison or paying hefty fines for failing to pay the correct taxes.
